Clinical Efficacy of Cefemetazole in Abdominal Surgical Field

Abstract
Cefmetazole sidium (CMZ) is a new semisynthetic second generation cephamycin dervative and is proven effective against most Gram(+) and Gram(-) bacteria, moderately effective against Bacteroides fragilis and not effective against Enterobacter spp. and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
To evaluate its efficacy, clinical and laboratory studies were performed in 23 abdominal surgic. I pa-¢¥ tients at Department of Surgery of Yeungnam University Hospital.
The results were as follows;
1) Among 23 patients, 15cases (65%) showed positive bacteria and 19 clinical strains were isolate, and indetified. E. coli was the most common organism (llstrains). Other strains were klebsiell (3), Staphylococcus (1), Serratia (1), Bacteroides (1), and Pseudomonas (2). In sensitivity test, 17 s , ains were sensitive to CMZ and 2 strains of pseudomonas were resistant.
2) CMZ was effective in all 5cases of prophylactic use group. In total 18cases of therapeutic group, 5 . ses were markedly effective (excellent) and llcases were moderately effective (Good) a !ainst microorganisms, but 2cases revealed poor response.
3) According to therapeutic effect of disease, 8 patients (80%) in 10 patients of hepatobiliary tract ere effective and all 5 patients of panperitonitis were effective to CMZ. 4) No clinical side effect was noted throughout the course of treatment.
